As I've been on the hunt for typewriters to add to my collection, I've been eyeing vintage radios. I'm not old enough to remember my grandparents owning any of these vacuum-tube radios but I do like them. I like the way they look. I like their simplicity. And I love the fact that they still can be used fifty years later.
Last Saturday, Heather and I were visiting one of our favorite antique stores when I decided to make the leap. They've had a small Silvertone radio for awhile. I hated to turn loose of almost $40 for it but since I had received some unexpected money last week, I decided to go for it. PLUS, the antique store is moving to a new location and everything was on sale! So, I got to buy my radio and for less than I had expected.
After I got it home I realized it needed a new vacuum tube. The guys over at Electric Radio Supply helped me out. I'm sure it was clear to them that I know nothing about old radios! But, after answering a few questions, my vacuum tubes were ordered and soon thereafter, sent on their way to me by the ol' United States Postal System. My new vacuum tubes were delivered today. I installed them and voila - a pre-1950 radio that plays just as good as it did when it was new (and sold for $9.95!).
By the way, radiomuseum.org is a very cool website if you want information on antique radios.
Although not a typewriter, the Silvertone seems right at home near my 1945 Smith-Corona Silent.
